Two ways to put solar on a roof in 2026:
- Solar shingles — building-integrated PV (BIPV). Tesla Solar
Roof + GAF Timberline Solar are the two real options.
- Rack-mount panels — traditional crystalline silicon panels
on aluminum rails attached to a non-solar roof.
Most AZ homeowners think solar shingles are clearly better because
they look cleaner. The math says otherwise — sometimes.
Cost comparison (2,200 sq ft AZ home, 8 kW system)
| Approach | System cost | Roof cost | Total | Annual output |
|----------|-------------|-----------|-------|--------------|
| New asphalt + rack-mount | $14,800 + $18,400 | — | $33,200 | 13,800 kWh |
| Tesla Solar Roof | $48,500 (combined) | included | $48,500 | 11,200 kWh |
| GAF Timberline Solar | $39,200 + $4K install | $14,800 | $58,000 | 9,800 kWh |
Rack-mount + new asphalt is the cost-best AND output-best. Tesla
Solar Roof costs ~46% more for ~19% less output. GAF Timberline
Solar costs ~75% more for ~30% less output (current real-world
AZ data).
Why output is lower on shingles
Solar shingles use crystalline silicon cells but with smaller
surface area + lower efficiency angles. Tesla cells are ~14%
efficient vs ~22% for premium rack-mount panels.
When solar shingles make sense
- HOA prohibits rack-mount — some Sedona + Prescott Country
Club HOAs require BIPV.
- You're re-roofing AND adding solar simultaneously — single
project, single contractor, single warranty.
- Aesthetic is non-negotiable — for some homeowners, the
seamless look is worth $15K+.
When rack-mount makes sense
- Existing roof has 10+ years of life — don't tear off a good
roof to install solar shingles.
- Maximum production matters — output difference is 25-30%.
- You want flexibility — panels can be expanded, repositioned,
or removed easier than shingles.
AZ-specific factors
- APS / SRP / TEP net metering — favors maximum output (rack-
mount).
- Fire codes — solar shingles pass Class A; rack-mount needs
certified mounting hardware.
- Resale — Tesla Solar Roof shows premium 8-12% in AZ MLS data;
rack-mount shows premium 4-6%.
