Reading Manufacturer Warranties — GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed Fine Print

The three big asphalt warranties have different exclusions. Here's the side-by-side that matters in NAZ.

Every shingle manufacturer advertises a "50-year" or "lifetime"

warranty. The fine print is where the protection actually lives.

Side-by-side as of April 2026:

GAF (Timberline HDZ + Timberline AS II)

  • Coverage: 30-year prorated material defect; 50 years for

Golden Pledge contractors

  • Wind: 130 mph for 15 years (10 years if not Golden Pledge)
  • Algae: 10-year StainGuard / 25-year StainGuard Plus
  • Transferability: One transfer in the first 1-10 years; $50

transfer fee

  • Exclusions: Improper ventilation (causes most denials), foot

traffic, hail above 1.75"

Owens Corning (Duration + Duration Storm)

  • Coverage: Lifetime for original owner if installed by

Platinum Preferred contractor; 50 years prorated otherwise

  • Wind: 130 mph for 10 years (15 with TruDefinition system)
  • Algae: 10-year resistance limited
  • Transferability: Lifetime with $99 fee
  • Exclusions: Wind events with debris (counts as impact, not

wind), inadequate underlayment

CertainTeed (Landmark + Landmark Storm)

  • Coverage: Lifetime + 10-year SureStart non-prorated, 25-year

prorated for transfer

  • Wind: 130 mph for 15 years (with starter + ridge SystemPlus)
  • Algae: 10-year StreakFighter
  • Transferability: One free transfer year 1-2; $50 thereafter
  • Exclusions: Material defect that "could be discovered through

reasonable inspection" — broad exclusion

What gets denied most

All three manufacturers deny ~60-75% of claims initiated by

homeowners (vs ~30% denial when contractor files). Top denial

reasons:

  1. "Improper ventilation" — most-cited. Required attic vent

area is 1:300 (sq ft attic per sq ft vent). Most older homes

fail this. Verify vent area BEFORE you re-roof.

  1. "Failure to maintain" — pine needles in valleys, missed

annual inspections.

  1. "Improper installation" — exposed-nail patterns, missing

starter strip, wrong fastener spacing.

  1. "Subject to act of nature exclusion" — hail above the

size threshold goes through the homeowner's hail policy

instead of warranty.

How to maximize warranty protection

  1. Hire a manufacturer-certified contractor. Golden Pledge

(GAF), Platinum Preferred (OC), SELECT ShingleMaster

(CertainTeed). Their installations get extended warranties.

  1. Document everything. Receipts, manufacturer cert, install

photos.

  1. Verify ventilation during install. Attic intake + ridge

outlet must total at least 1:300 of attic floor area.

  1. Annual inspection. Most warranties require "reasonable

maintenance." Annual = good faith.

  1. Don't pressure wash. Voids most warranties.
